It was a long afternoon, evening for Raton baseball and softball as they hosted St Mikes for double headers Friday afternoon in Raton.
The Lady Horsemen came into the game with a 6-15 record on the season with one of those wins (12-3) against Raton earlier in the season. Coach Joe Alvarez noted that he had a young inexperienced team this year. Raton too is a young team with mostly freshmen and sophomores complimented by two seniors (Alison Gigante and Javon Edwards) and two juniors (Kaylie Doyon and Giana Marez).
Game one started out going tit for tat but St Mikes opens it up in the second going thru the batting order four players short of two times and racking up 11 runs for a 15-3 lead. Raton managed to hold the Lady Horsemen in the remaining innings to only two or three runs while Raton scored four in the third and two the next two innings. Haydyn Middlebrook started on the mound for Raton and Mariah Gonzales finished the first game, both girls had three strikeouts in the game. Lady Horsemen Erianna Sisneros went the distance with three strikeouts and three walks.
Game two for the ladies was a roller coaster of a game with tie scores in the second (4-4) and fourth (7-7) innings and Raton taking the lead in the fifth inning by one run. The sixth inning was all St Mikes who scored six runs and finished off the seventh inning with nine more runs. Raton battled in the seventh but fell short by the extra five runs St Mikes scored in the sixth. Mariah Gonzales started the game for Raton with Samantha Phillips coming in to finish it off. Gonzales ended the game with one strikeout and one walk while Samantha had seven strikeouts and five walks. St Mikes went through four pitchers in the game with a combined 20 walks and only five strikeouts.
By the time the second game was over the girls had spent over three hours on the field. Surprisingly both of the girls games went longer than both the boys games on Friday.
Over on the baseball field Raton held their own till the third inning when St Mikes rounded the bases with six runs and another six runs in the fifth ended the game with the 10-run rule. Raton went through three pitchers in this game while St Mikes had two pitchers.Camron Edmondson had one strikeout and two walks while GB Oliver walked three and struck out one. Adrian Romero finished off the game with three walks and strikeouts for Raton.
Game two was simply all St Mikes as Raton couldn’t find the groove and allowed nine runs around the bases in the first inning. St Mikes held Raton to only four runs in the game while they added another eight runs in the fourth. The game ended on a the 10-run rule in the fifth. Raton went through three pitchers in this game while St Mikes Jackson Heath went four innings and Michael Geisler finished off the fifth inning for St Mikes. Heath had three strikeouts and walks while Giesler finished off the game with two Ks and no walks.
