Juan Martinez, age 66 returned to our creator on December 9th, 2022. Juan was born to Faustina and Joseph Martinez on June 24th, 1956. As a child Juan took an interest in acting, performing on the Shuler Stage. This is where he met his mentor Bill Fegan. It was through his guidance after graduating from Raton High School as part of the class of 1974 Juan joined the United States Marine Corp. During his service Juan worked as a flight mechanic aboard airship carriers in Okinawa Japan where he rose to the rank of corporal. After his service, Juan began working at C.I.A headquarters before returning home to Raton. Juan welcomed his only child Jesse Martinez in 1981 while earning two degrees from Trinidad State. Juan tried his hand at many different professions such as carpenter, electrician, a cameraman at La Mesa Park and, he even returned to the Shuler. This time behind the scenes.
Juan was an amateur astronomer, artist, and avid photographer who couldn’t say no to a good book or a great song. Juan was a proud New Mexican, armed with an infectious smile, and a thirst for knowledge and adventure he traveled the state extensively exploring the beauty this earth has to offer. He enjoyed learning about its history, culture, its people. His insights as well as his sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Affectionately known to his family as Johnny Boy he is survived by his Son Jesse Martinez. Sister Virginia and her Husband Ralph Mendez, Brothers Billy Martinez and Tommy Martinez, partner Diane Berry and family. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as extended family who lovingly called him Uncle John.
He was preceded in death by his parents Faustina Tafoya and Joseph Martinez and, Sister Mary Lou Sanchez.
At Juan’s request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service has been scheduled for 11 am on Friday, April 28th at St Patrick’s St Joseph’s Catholic Church with Rosary followed by mass led by celebrant Father Bill Woytavich.
