The Des Moines Boys Basketball team was not supposed to make it to the 2023 NM State Quarterfinals, but nobody told the Demons and coach Ben Doherty. They upset Cimarron in the first round of 16 and were playing loose in their game at Bernalillo against #2 seed Ft Sumner/House and the Demons led 22-19 at the end of the first, but then a total of 14 3-pointers by Ft Sumner/House spelled the end of their run finding themselves on the wrong end of an 82-63 decision.
Des Moines ended the season 21-11 and can look ahead with anticipation as the roster will not lose anybody to graduation. The Demons were led in Wednesday’s game by Caleb Sumpter with 17, Calder Green had 15, Noah Johnson contributed 13, Destry Sumpter and Nash Trujillo had 8 apiece and Kayle Roark added 2.
Ft Sumner/House’s ClayNorman had half of the team’s 14 three-pointers and was 4 of 6 from the line to lead all scorers with 35, plus had 8 assists.
Doherty is assisted by Jarrod Archuleta.
