The Springer Lady Red Devils broke open a close game in the third quarter and then held off a fourth quarter surge by Logan to catapult them into the Class A quarterfinals with a heart-stopping 54 – 53 win during the Friday, March 4 opening round of 16.
Seeded #8 Springer hosted #9 Logan and the game was as close as the rankings and went back and forth for the entire evening as evidenced by a one point Logan half-time lead 26 – 25.
The Lady Red Devils went on an 11-0 run in the third and led 41- 34 going into the final 8 minutes. Logan hit 2 of their 5 total three point shots in the fourth, but missed a final shot and a put back to give Springer their first quarterfinal berth in many years.
The Lady Red Devils were led in scoring by Kyanna Rodriguez’ 17 including 9 of 12 from the line. Abigail Eppler had 11, Fatima Levario had 9, Valeria Balderrama put in 7, Brenna Duran had 6 while Olivia Burton and Naomi Rivera each had 2.
Springer upped its record to 21-6 and will face off against #1 seed Melrose in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 8 at Bernalillo High School at 6:30 pm.
