The Robertson Cardinals travelled up I-25 Wednesday afternoon February 1, 2023 to battle the Tigers for a district game in Tiger Gym where they easily marked the win column to go 4-1 in district play.
The JV game got off to a slow and dismal start for Raton as the Cardinals walloped Raton by 24 points in the first quarter. The second quarter is the only one in which Raton scored double digits in the game. Robertson first half saw them reach 55 points and then went teen double digits in the second half. At the buzzer it was a 50 plus lead for Robertson as the toppled Raton 85-32.
The varsity game was much better for Raton as the boys kept it fairly close the first half of play. Robertson however suffered three technicals during the game and WD Hyer being the man at the line sunk five of the free throws. He ended going 11 of 14 free throws in the second quarter alone. By halftime though Raton trailed by 29-42.
Halftime has been a curse for Raton as they come back from the break and go cold only scoring 11 points in the third quarter while the Cardinals popped in 20. Rebounds were another issue for Raton as Robertson’s 6’1″ senior Bodie Schlinger and others kept Raton off the boards. Many of the Robertson rebounds resulted in points. Yet as the buzzer sounded to end the game Raton felt the sting as Robertson took the win 84-56.
