After having two girl’s games cancelled this past week due to weather it was a relief to get the boys district game with Santa Fe Prep in the books Tuesday January 24, 2003 as they travelled to Raton.
The JV game was all Raton as Raton took the early lead and out scored the Griffins by 20 in the first quarter 21-3. It was single digits for both teams except for a 11 point third quarter for Prep and a 10 point fourth quarter for Raton. Fouls were a bit loped sided as the Griffins were only charged eight the entire game while Raton racked up 25 fouls. Prep however was unable to really capitalize at the line making 11 out of 28 attempts.
Varsity play took on a similar look except it was Prep taking the early lead and finishing off the first quarter up by seven 17-10. Second quarter action saw a turn around in scoring with Raton making six of seven at the charity line to outscore Prep 15 to 6 and take the lead going into the locker room 25-24.
Third quarter action saw another flip flop in scoring as Prep did a 15-9 quarter and take a five point lead. Once again free throws could have made a bigger difference than it did in the fourth quarter as Prep went to the line 13 time but could only seven points. Raton kept it close but as the clock drained down to the final seconds Prep had managed to pull the two point lead they had out to a 52-47 win. Raton went one of four at the line in the third and didn’t even see the charity line in the fourth.
