The Texline Tornados blew into Raton Tuesday December 20, 2022 for three games on the basketball court and other than the girl’s game they were blow outs.
The JV boys took the court first with Texline taking the early lead making baskets count as they worked the ball down the court. The Tiger defense simply couldn’t keep the Tornados down as they took a quick 16-2 lead in the first quarter with two minutes left in the quarter. At the final buzzer which came quickly with the running clock it was Texline 68 and Raton 22.
The girls took the court next with Raton taking the lead into half time. Raton played an aggressive game bringing the ball down the court and working the play for the points. Yet as the halftime buzzer sounded Raton could only muster a four point lead in the low scoring game 18-14.
The second half saw Texline come out with adjustments and outscore Raton 2-1 in the third quarter and end the quarter with a six point lead. The Lady Tigers battled back keeping the game close but unable to retake the lead. As the buzzer sounded ending the game Texline had slim five point lead for a final score of 43-38.
The varsity boys took the court with little fan fare Tuesday evening struggling against the two tall Tornados as they dominated the boards and made the shots to outscore Raton 19-10 to end the first quarter. The second quarter was more of the same as Raton struggled to make points. At halftime Texline lead by 20 as they outscored Raton 25-14 in the second quarter. Texline’s Hayden Alston over six feet tall was a solid force to contend with as he dropped in 16 points in the first half alone.
The second half of play saw Raton continue to struggle with making the baskets but still managed double digits in both quarters. The referees allowed the game to move along and at one point Texline lead by more than 35 points and no player with more than three fouls for either team. As the final buzzer sounded ending the game Texline would mark the win column with a 89-54 score.
