The 86th Annual Trinidad State College Invitational basketball tournament got under way in Scott Gym Wednesday November 30, 2022 with 16 area teams competing for the first place trophy.
The Raton Girls took to the court Wednesday evening against the Hoehne Lady Farmers for their first game of the season under head coach Brylee Medina. As the game go underway the Lady Tigers struggled to find a rhythm as the Lady Farmers out did Raton ending the game with a 29 point lead.
The boys took to the court for the last game of the evening and what a barn burner of game it was with game going down to the wire. With 4.8 seconds on the clock the Farmers inbound the ball and take it down court and pass it off to Bobby Terry who puts up the uncontested shot as the buzzer sounds making it a 46-45 win for the Farmers.
During the second round of play both Raton teams ended up playing the Primero Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs and pulled out resounding wins. The Lady Tigers simply played a good game and overpowered the Lady Bulldogs for a 34 point win. The boys game was a little closer as the game swapped leads until the second half when Raton took the lead for good and went on to a 14 point win to move on to the consolation game.
On Saturday during the consolation games again both Raton teams played the same school’s teams from Kim, Colorado for the consolation. The Lady Mustangs played a very aggressive game which proved to be a bit more than the Lady Tigers could handle. However, the Raton defense managed to hold up and didn’t let Kim runaway with the game, only winning by nine.
The boys game on the other hand was a tough win for Raton as the game stayed close with the Mustangs also playing an aggressive style of play by double teaming the ball handler which caused several turnovers during the game. Despite the aggressive play Raton managed to work the ball inside for points. Raton was also handicapped a bit in that Cayden Walton and Anderson Weese were not playing as they were in Artesia for the North South Allstar football game. Weese a 6’2″ senior was tough under the basket during Wednesday night’s game.
