News Release

FEMA Specialists Available to Talk with New Mexicans at Two Las Vegas Churches

SANTA FE, New Mexico – FEMA specialists will be at two Las Vegas churches beginning Monday, Oct. 3 through Friday, Oct. 7. Residents may visit the First United Presbyterian Church MondayWednesday or Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., or the Cornerstone Church Tuesday or Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

These events give New Mexicans an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a FEMA specialist to complete a disaster assistance application, upload documents or receive a status update on an existing case. Residents should bring all FEMA related correspondence with them to help accelerate the application process. Crisis counselors will also be available to talk with anyone who wishes to have a conversation.

FEMA Voluntary Agency Liaisons will be in attendance as well to help with referrals to non-profit and voluntary organizations for possible assistance for unmet disaster-related needs. Residents can also learn more about wildfire and flooding prevention as well as other mitigation techniques.

Specialists will be at the following locations:

First United Presbyterian Church
1000 Douglas Ave
Las Vegas, NM 87701
Oct. 3, 5, and 7: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Cornerstone Church
2207 7th St
Las Vegas, NM 87701
Oct. 4 and 6: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

New Mexicans may also visit the Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Mora County at the Buena Vista Fire Department or stop by a FEMA mobile DRC located in Rociada this week and the CHET Volunteer Fire Department between Oct. 4 and 7. Appointments aren’t necessary.

Residents do not need to visit a DRC to get assistance. There are three ways to apply to FEMA:

  • The fastest and easiest way to apply is by visiting disasterassistance.gov/;
  • Call 800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone lines operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Those who use a relay service such as a videophone should update FEMA with their specific number assigned to that service.
  • Download the FEMA Mobile App by texting ANDROID or APPLE to 43362.

To address many of the common myths and rumors during the New Mexico wildfires, FEMA activated a rumor/myth webpage. It can be accessed online at fema.gov/disaster/4652/faq-rumor.
