The call came in to Raton Dispatch at about 1:47 p.m. on September 1, 2022 of a car on fire at 421 South Second Street.

Upon arrival Raton Fire and Emergency Services found a small car fully engulfed sitting next to the southeast gas pump at the Crossroads station on South Second. According to RFES Caption Garcia the individual driving the car had pulled in to the station to fill up as the car had acted like it was almost out of fuel. Once stopped by the gas pump the car fire started. Quick action by the station attendant averted a major disaster as the pump was quickly shut down and an attempt with a fire extinguisher held the fire for a few seconds before RFES arrived on scene.

The station remained open once the fire had been extinguished. Cause of the fire is suspected to be from a mechanical failure.
