Edward Estes Van Dyke, aged 88, died on June 6, 2022, in Raton, New Mexico.
Estes was born the youngest of 5 children on January 20, 1934, to Dr. Paul Shepherd and
Louise Estes Van Dyke in San Antonio Texas.
He grew up in Texas and studied at Austin college, graduating in 1956 with a BA in Sociology.
Estes went on to Colorado and received a Master’s degree in social work from the University of
Denver.
He married Roberta Silva from Massachusetts in 1963 and worked for Jefferson County as a
social worker for several years. They had 3 children and lived in Golden for many years. Estes
left Golden for summer work in Montana and Wyoming. He moved back to Texas in 1983 where
he studied the history of many areas including Trinidad and Raton. He settled in Raton and
lived there until his death on June 6, 2022.
Estes will be missed for his hearty laugh and his love for God, politics, and classical music.
Estes is survived by daughter Debbie Van Dyke of California, daughter Amy Mewborn and
spouse Steve Mewborn, son Brian Van Dyke, and his grandsons Tanner Moore, Blake Mewborn, and Wesley Mewborn.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 15 at 10 am at the Mt Calvary Cemetery in Raton.
