Harvey Lee Shannon was the youngest of five children; he was born on July 14, 1948, in La Junta, Colorado to Cecil and Helen Shannon. He grew up on the family ranch south of Kim, Colorado, and graduated from Kim High School. During his lifetime, Harvey was a man of many hats. He served his country during the Vietnam War in the US Navy, he was a cowboy and rancher, a cattle trader, tire man, hunting guide, feed guy, beloved husband and father, and quite a good-humored cowboy poet and storyteller. Of late, he loved to read, visit and spin a good story, cook, and spend quiet time alone tending cattle south of Kim, Colorado, and enjoying the scenery around the Des Moines, New Mexico area. He resided in Des Moines with his wife Phyllis, to whom he had been married for 32 years. All who knew him would agree that there was no one else quite like Harvey. He was preceded in death by his son Justin Shannon in 2017.
His survivors include his wife Phyllis Shannon, daughter Kari Johnson and her fiancé Jimmy Ramos of Dalhart, Texas, and a son Brian Shannon of Orlando, Florida. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, four siblings, many nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family and old friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
