Area in Valle Vidal to Temporarily Close for Rio Grande Cutthroat Restoration Work

TAOS, NM – April 20, 2022 – The Carson National Forest will close a portion of Valle Vidal next week to assist the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) in restoring Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout and native fish communities on the upper Rio Costilla Watershed. The purpose of the closure is to provide for the protection of public health and safety by limiting the potential for incidental or accidental exposure to fish piscicide while it is being applied.

A Forest Order will close the area around the Rio Costilla drainage from Monday, April 25, through the end of the day, Monday, May 2. The closure area includes lower Comanche Creek, Chuckwagon Creek, Fernandez Creek, La Cueva Creek, Powderhouse Creek, Blind Canyon and all other tributaries. Valle Vidal Road (1950) will be open for drive-thru only. Costilla Dam Road (1900) will be closed, except to employees at the Costilla Dam. A full map is available online.

This is the first of three treatments in 2022. Two more weeklong closures will occur later this year.

The NMDGF will have an information booth on Valle Vidal Road with personnel to interact with the public during this time.
