Raton Tiger baseball hosted West Vegas on Friday in a District 2AAA doubleheader with Raton taking the first 13-0 and dropping the nightcap 10-8.
Senior Chance Middlebrook started and finished the 5 inning, 10 run shortened first game and scattered five hits and struck out four to earn the shut-out.
Matthew Quartieri launched a grand slam and also hit a triple to drive in five for the Tigers.
The second game was all Vegas until the fourth inning when Raton scored 7 to tie the game going into the late innings.
West scored one in the sixth and then Raton came up in the bottom of the seventh and Sophomore Jacob Mattorano doubled down the right-field line. A walk to Isaac Garcia and then a sacrifice bunt by Dre Nash, put runners on second and third. Will Berry was hit by a pitch, to load the bases, then chance Middlebrook walked in the tying run. Then after a strikeout, Dylan Quartieri was at the plate and he hit a soft roller to the short-stop and was called out at a close face-first slide to first base.
West scored two in the top of the eighth with two out, but Raton made it dramatic as the Tigers loaded the bases, but left all the ducks on the pond to end the game and give West their first District win of the year. Raton’s district record is 3 -3 and the Tigers will next travel to Robertson on April 12.
