Joe Marquez was born on October 9, 1938, to Abenicio and Eleanor (Rivera) Marquez in Des Moines, New Mexico. Joe was well known for his love of being out and active, especially participating in city sports leagues & supporting youth sports. He loved watching pro bowling, westerns & cartoons with his children and grandchildren. Joe served in the United States Air Force from February 1956 to February 1960. In his lifetime, he worked as a ranch hand, school bus driver, commercial transport driver, and a coal & potash miner for over 30 years. He spent many years playing & coaching baseball, basketball, and softball. He enjoyed many years of bowling, fishing, camping, and hunting with friends and family. He was one of Raton Tiger’s biggest fans. Joe had a great sense of humor with a smile that would light up any room and he had a very special way of taking care of babies and making them laugh.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Francis Jiron of 12 years, his second wife of 38 years, Nancy (Paiz) Marquez; his parents, Abenicio and Elenor Marquez; Siblings Victor, George, Steve, Tony, Amelia, Mary, Nancy, Evirilia and Ernest.
His incredible life was full of depth and love and will forever be cherished by his surviving children David Marquez (Joyce) of Albuquerque, NM, Susan Tarufelli (Nick) of Raton, Lisa Valdez (Eli) of Raton, Josephine Encinias (Eddie) of Albuquerque, NM, Michael Marquez (Cassandra) of Walsenburg, CO, Nicole Marquez of Raton, Jack Marquez (Arla) of Aurora, CO, Joe A Marquez Jr. (Angel) of Broomfield, CO, and Andrea Lucero (DJ) of Thornton, CO. His Stepchildren; Mia Paiz of Raton, Elma J. Sanchez of Raton, and Joseph Paiz (Becky) of Arlington, TX, and mother-in-law Elma (Sandoval) Paiz of Raton, NM
27 Grandchildren and 32 Great-grandchildren (and counting). He is also survived by siblings, James Marquez (spouse Delores), Cecilia “Tiny” Manfredi, Gene Marquez (spouse Gertrude), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
He was loved by all and will be dearly missed.
