Santa Fe Indian School Braves traveled the clear roads of I-25 after a late night snow left roads snow covered to start the day Saturday, February 12, to take on the Raton Tigers for a District 2AAA game.
The JV took the floor first Saturday afternoon where the Tigers took the lead with a 12 point run in the first quarter and found them selves struggling in the second quarter. By halftime Raton led SFIS 26-17. Raton held the Braves to single digit quarters the second half of the game to take a 54-22 win.
The varsity Tigers got off to a slow start going down by 12 points at one point early in the first quarter. The second quarter, however, was a different story as Raton made the shots and took the lead holding the Braves to only three points in the quarter and went to the locker room with a 36-19 lead.
It was a defensive battle to begin the third quarter as each team only scored a total of 11 points. The defensive play continued into the fourth quarter with Raton again out scoring the Braves to gain a 22 point lead at one point. Raton ended the game with the win and a 58-33 score keeping pace with the Robertson Cardinals with both teams sporting a 6-1 District record.
Raton will host the Cardinals on Wednesday, Feb. 16 with the regular season district championship possibly going down to the final game between these two. The first meeting was postponed by snow and will be made up on Monday, Feb 21, right before the district tournaments start.
