Helen M. Adams age 92, died in the Health Care Resort Assisted Living in Colorado Springs, CO.
She was born in Trinidad, CO on March 23, 1929, to Stanley and Anna Jackovich. Helen grew up in Morley, CO where she attended grade school. How proud she was of her Slavish heritage and that she was a coal miner’s daughter. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Trinidad, CO. In 1947 she moved to Raton and got a job working in the 1st National Bank as a teller. In 1949 she married John Thomas Adams, and they had one son, Don, born in 1950.
Later on, Helen joined her husband in the family gasoline business, State Oil Company, started by her father-in-law, the late Cal Adams. She did the books. After graduating from college, their son, Don, was encouraged to join the company, also. The corporation expanded and became very successful. In 2005, the family business was sold.
Previously, Helen converted Adams Burger Barn into Helen’s Gift Shop. Which she loved more than anything. She ran and operated this iconic place for 48 years, until her untimely accident. As she was locking her doors to her gift shop, one evening, a fierce wind-gust knocked her down the steps, and sadly both her hip and leg were broken. She was never the same after that accident, and obviously, her gift shop had to be closed down. But until the age of 91, Helen lived her life with excellent health, and she was quite independent. Often, she remarked to her family, that “If I die in the gift shop, just remember to tell everyone that I died doing what I loved the most!”
Besides work, Helen loved attending the St. Patrick and St. Joseph Catholic Church’s. She loved to keep her house and cars spotless. She was a great cook, and she had a talent of baking and decorating cakes.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, John T. Adams, her dad Stanley Jackovich, her mom Anna Jakovich and her brother Stanley Jackovich, JR.
She is survived by her one and only beloved son, Don Adam and his wife Melinda, of Aurora, CO; her grandson, Brent and wife Karla. And great grandchildren, Ethan and Caleb Adams of Cartersville, GA; her granddaughter, Adrienne and husband Ryan and great grandchildren. Bobby and Anna Hazel of Houston, TX; and her sister in-law; Francie Jackovich of Pueblo CO.
