Thursday night December 9th in Springer at the 2021 Cowbell Tourney brought some exciting games as the night cap game between Cimarron and Questa went down to the wire and ended with a 2-point difference.
Game nine saw the Lady Rams take on the Lady Demons who, despite three players getting into foul trouble early in the game, never gave up. Cimarron however couldn’t take advantage of the fouls at the line going three of 19 attempts.
Wagon Mound playing with four 8th graders gave the Bears a run for the money however the first quarter of action was too much to over come as the Bear’s Orren Floyd once again scored over 20 points with 17 (3-3 pointers) of them coming in the first quarter. Adriano Rivera made 18 trips to the charity line where he added 10 points to the mix.
The Lady Trojans took on the Lady Tigers in game 11 of the tourney keeping it close in the first quarter with Wagon Mound leading by two 9-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Raton girls found the groove in the second quarter scored 22 points. When the buzzer sounded it was a 37 point deficit.
The Questa Wildcats to the lead over the Cimarron Rams but couldn’t hold it as the Rams battled on took an 11-point lead. The Wildcats battled back and as the last two minutes of the game went on it was a four to two point difference with Cimarron defense finally putting laid on it. This game as many others during the tourney could have went either way at the free throw line. The Wildcats did 11 of 24 attempts while Cimarron put in eight of 27 shots. Had either team made more free throws this game could have gone either way.
Due to health issues the Wagon Mound teams did not return to the tourney on Saturday so the Raton Lady Tigers JV team played Des Moines on Saturday for the consolation game. The Lady Demons struggled in the first quarter but found the groove and pulled away in the second quarter and go on for the win.
Game 18 which was the boys consolation game was cancelled as Questa decided not to come and play the Raton boys JV.
The Raton Lady Tigers took on the Cimarron Lady Rams for the Consolation Championship game where the Lady Tigers took the lead early on in the game and went into halftime with a 32-21 lead. The Lady Rams battled on and came back but it was too little to late as Raton held them off for the win.
The Maxwell Bears battled the Cimarron Rams in another defensive game that saw single digit scoring in the first quarter. The Bears took the lead in the second and by halftime lead 23-19. The battle continued into the second half with Maxwell extending their lead in the fourth quarter for the Consolation Championship win.
