There she met and married Bill Puryear and had four children, (Sophie Atwater, Charmaine Demcheck, Adeline Shell, and Danny Puryear. Virginia had her own Beauty Shop on Moulton Ave. and held an active license for many years easily making many friends and associates resulting in a successful business with many great memories for her.
In 1977 she met and married the love of her life, Virgil Buscarini. Virgil had returned to Raton from the LA area with his two children, Lynne Fanelli, and Sonny Buscarini.
Together they raised their 6 children, 13 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Loving all of them dearly. Our family was always very happy to see them together, bowling, fishing, gambling, and taking care of each other.
One of their homemade treasures, “Winter Wonderland” was donated to the Raton Main Street in 2017 just before Virgil’s passing for the people of Raton and the surrounding area to enjoy for years to come. Great happiness overcame Virginia when she heard it would be open this year for visitors.
Virginia is survived by a loving sister, Adeline Segotta, brother Ray Castellini and Albert and Sandra Castellini, brother-in-law Richard Towndrow, several nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends,
Proceeded in death by her parents, the love of her life Virgil Buscarini, brother Louie Castellini and his wife Flora Castellini, Sister, Della Towndrow, Brother-in-law Richard Segotta, Daughter-in-law, Ernestine Puryear, Son-in-law Jim Shell, Grandsons Joshua Atwater, and David Puryear.
Virginia was honored to have served Colfax County for many years as a public servant in the elected positions of Probate Judge and County Commissioner. As Probate Judge she performed many marriage ceremonies and enjoyed meeting each couple and hearing their stories. Many couples are still together and would remind her of their weddings and her personal touches to each of their ceremonies.
Like many Ratonians, Virginia shared memories of La Mesa Park where she worked in various capacities and right next to her mother, Louise Castellini in the clubhouse for many years. She was an Account Representative for First Federal Savings and Loan until its closing.
After Virginia’s stroke in 1993, Virgil dedicated his life to her every need. And what an incredible job he did and can be credited to her long life. His dedication to her was amazing and his love for her was immeasurable.
New hobbies began and they would cook together making pies, ravioli, homemade ice cream, and many other dishes. Each thought they had the best ice cream recipe and would, at times, argue over it but agreed their pies were great. According to KRTN Radio station owner, Billy Donati, they made “the best lemon meringue pie ever!!”
Virgil passed and Virginia happily began a new adventure with her daughter in Las Cruces where she enjoyed the sunshine a garden full of tomatoes and watermelons and new friends and neighbors to include Mike Nail, Jan Saari, Barbara Howard, Ginger Moore, Dora, and Mary Ward, Joyce Ann Newell, Yolanda McLimans. They filled her days with laughter, ice cream, visits, and sharing stories of Raton. However, NOTHING, not even ice cream would make her happier than a call from home…..those calls just lit her up with a loving smile and memories of each.
