In Loving Memory of Olive Faye Gaines

Olive Faye Gaines, 94, passed away in Amarillo, TX on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.
Faye was born to Charlie & Pearl Griffeth in Raton, New Mexico on April 8, 1927. She
married the love of her life, Garrett Edward “Pete” Gaines, Sr on December 23, 1944.
Faye was a strong, brave, and independent woman, she was a life-long rancher. She and
her husband of 55 years built their home at the Point of Rocks with their bare hands.
Faye was always welcoming guests at their home on the Santa Fe Trail, she never knew
a stranger. Beginning in 1996, Faye started serving on the Santa Fe Trail Association
Board of Directors, she went on to serve two more terms, before focusing on the chapter
level serving in different positions over the many years. Elected again to the board, as
the director standing strong to fight to preserve the history of the trail.
Faye worked for over 30 years as a census worker. Traveling thousands of miles a year in
Northern New Mexico collecting statistics. Faye enjoyed doing genealogy and traced
family back to the American Revolutionary War. Allowing her to register as a member
of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). As a guardian of history, Faye and
her husband Pete were given many awards from the Santa Fe trail. Faye liked to
crochet and quilt in her spare time. She was the rock of the family; she will be dearly
missed.
Faye was preceded in death by her husband Pete; her parents; Charlie and Pearl
Griffeth; her sister, June; her son, Garrett Jr “Gary”. Survivors include her daughter,
Letha Allaire and husband Robert of Farley, New Mexico; four grandchildren, Victoria
Gaines “Tori” of Leander, Texas; Shawn Price and wife Roxanne of Las Vegas,
Nevada; Garrett Gaines, III “Trey” and wife Wendy of Hobbs, New Mexico; Tami Clay
of Amarillo, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Cody, Garrison, Peter, Emily, Katie, and
Laci; great-grandchild Beau and numerous other family members.
Services will be held at the Methodist Church in Clayton, NM on Saturday, November
13th 11:00 AM.
