During her Senior year at Clayton High School, Sonia started working part-time at the Farmers and Stockmen’s Bank. She had a love for learning and her curiosity about all aspects of banking served her well. She worked her way up the ladder and enjoyed a 43-year career, retiring from her position as Executive Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors in 1998.
She married Gene Maulsby in 1958 and he eventually became employed at the same bank that Sonia worked. He also retired in 1998 from Cashier and Security Officer position.
Sonia worked long hours at the bank but also ran a household as a loving wife and mother to two children, Christopher and Jennifer.
In 1978 Sonia obtained her private pilot’s license. One of her favorite flights was a trip to Phoenix, AZ with Jennifer for a memorable visit with Christopher. Sonia was a natural athlete and enjoyed golfing, snow skiing, windsurfing and even snorkeling on family vacations. She won many local area women’s golf tournaments throughout the years. Other hobbies included reading, completing crossword puzzles and word games, as well as playing card games on the computer. Sonia also enjoyed traveling to various landmarks in the country. She cherished spending time with her two grandsons and loved spoiling them during visits in New Mexico and Colorado.
Sonia loved animals and dedicated much of her free time feeding homeless cats and dogs. She and Gene liked to bird watch and they fed local wild birds year-round.
Sonia was also active in her community. Her customers loved her at the bank, and she reveled in being able to help people. She served on the Union County Hospital Auxiliary Board, the Herzstein Museum Board, and she volunteered as a poll worker at most elections in Clayton.
Sonia is survived by her husband, Gene, son, Christopher (Christine), two grandsons, Michael and Ryan, and daughter, Jennifer. She also has 3 surviving siblings—Paul Hanson (age 96) and two sisters, Sharon Kear and Sharon Durbin (twins, age 77) and numerous nieces and nephews.
