Billy P. Mondragon Sr., 90 of Raton NM. passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at the Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Service in Walsenburg, Colorado and was reunited with the love of his life Bertie.
He was born in Cimarron, NM on April 30, 1931 to Lollie Mondragon. He served in the United States Army. He loved to go fishing and hunting and enjoyed living on the ranch. He worked for the New Mexico State Highway Department in Des Moines, NM. until his retirement. He also was an active member of the Men’s bowling league. He enjoyed taking road trips with his wife Bertie and taking her shopping. They traveled to watch their children, and grandchildren play sports, attended state tournaments, and FCCLA Meetings. Most importantly they enjoyed their time in Las Vegas, Nevada which was a yearly trip. Everyone knew him as Big Bill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Lollie Mondragon and his wife, Bertie. He was a member of St. Patrick-St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He is survived by his daughters Linda Ortiz and husband, Anthony of Raton, NM., and Janet Mondragon of Las Cruces, NM., sons Billy Mondragon Jr. and wife Joan of Artesia, NM., and Greg Mondragon and wife Roberta of Raton, NM.; grandchildren Andrea Aragon and husband Paul Reyes, Aaron Ortiz and wife Christy, Patrick Mondragon, Michael Mondragon and wife Desiree, Bryan Mondragon, Samuel Mondragon, Emilio Mondragon, Makayla Mondragon and Tony Dye, Jonathan Valdez and Nicole Rodriguez; great grandchildren Analisa Aragon, Dion Aragon, Alexa Ortiz, Gabriel Ortiz, Ellie Ortiz, William Mondragon, Amaya Mondragon, Zaedyn Mondragon, Krislynn Mondragon, Kylynn Mondragon, Abigail Valdez and Amiyah Valdez; step-great grandchildren Reyes Aragon, Taylor Aragon and Aubrey Valdez.
Bill’s family would like to express their thanks to the Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center for the superior care, excellent staff and for making the family feel so welcomed and supported. A special thanks for the Veterans flag tribute, saluting him by all the staff and residents with his final good-bye, was sincerely appreciated and such an honor.
Visitation will be Thursday August 19, 2021 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home in Raton. Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be Friday August 20, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Patrick’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church recited by Aaron Ortiz, Mass of the resurrection will follow at 10:30 A.M. with Father William Woytavich as the celebrant. Rite of Christian burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary cemetery in Raton.
