In Loving Memory of Margaret Mary Stohr

Margaret Mary Stohr, age 96, of Raton, passed away peacefully June 19, 2021 in Raton. She was born April 9, 1925 in Ionia, Missouri the daughter of Joseph and Kathryn Stohr. During her youth, her father died and she and her mother and brothers made their way to New Mexico, living on Johnson Mesa for a time before moving into town. Margaret graduated from St. Patrick’s School in Raton. She went on to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education. She loved teaching and working with children. She taught at schools in small towns in Kansas and New Mexico before settling in at Columbian School in Raton teaching second grade for thirty nine years beginning in 1950. You could find her many summers working at La Mesa Park Race Track as a cashier.

Margaret was a humble, shy person but was strong and resilient. She took care of her dear mother for many years. The hobbies she enjoyed were quilting, crocheting, baking and gardening. Her nieces and nephews always looked forward to her homemade rolls and pies. She loved God and family with all her heart. She was a parishioner at St. Patrick’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Margaret was preceded in death by heer parents and her brother, Kenneth(and Mary Jo), and nephew Terry. She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Jean Bissett, Kay Stohr-Banks (Jerry), Ken Stohr(Kathy), Rosemary Stohr, and John Stohr (Cindy). She is also survived by nine great nieces and nephews and five great-great nieces and nephews.

Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be Thursday July 15, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Patrick’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raton recited by the Legion of Mary. Mass of the resurrection will follow at 10:30 with Father William Woytavich as the celebrant. Rite of Christian burial and inurnment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Raton.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Vincent de Paul Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

The family would like to offer their profound thanks to Robin Pilley, Envoy Hospice nurse and to all the staff at Beehive Homes in Raton.
