Robertson Teams Take Double Headers From Raton

By Marty Mayfield

Raton ended the regular season as they hosted Robertson for both baseball and softball double headers Friday after the Class 3A State Track Meet moved the games from Saturday to Friday.

The first softball game got off to a rocky start as there were controversial calls made before Robertson was able to field their fourth batter. The first call came when a long hit into outfield was later recalled for an illegal pitch after Taylor Quintana rounded the bases and slid home and was tagged out but all for naught. The umpire for some reason allowed the play to progress but called an illegal pitch as Raton pitcher Samantha Phillips apparently stepped outside the pitching lane. A call that Raton coaches challenged and would continue to question as there is no pitching lane described in the high school softball rule book. So instead of an out Quintana went back to bat and later scored. There would be two more illegal pitches called on Raton pitchers one being a hop and the second being called when the pitcher placed the ball in her glove more than once.

The other call came when the Robertson base runner was called for interfering with the Raton short stop fielding a ground ball. Short Stop Giana Marez still fielded the ball and threw it to first where the base runner was called out as the ball arrived well ahead of the batter. However the umpires ruled the base runner going to third was out for interfering and the batter going to first was safe.

Despite the controversy 8-8 Raton managed to keep 14-0 Robertson close until the third inning when Robertson managed an eight run rally to give them the 14-4 lead after three innings. The bright spot for Raton which gave them the final runs of the game was when Giana Marez slammed the ball over the right field fence for a two run homer. The game was called after Robertson added even more runs to the board ending the game early after four innings with a 22-7 win.

Game two of the double header went the seven inning distance as Raton worked a seven run rally in the first inning to take a 7-1 lead. Raton managed to keep Robertson in check until the fourth inning when Robertson started the rally with a nine run inning. they put up six runs in the fifth and another eight runs in the seventh for the 26-9 win.

The Raton boys at 6-7 for the season took a goose egg for game one as Robertson who came to the game with a 9-7 record shut the Tigers down 13-0 and did the same in game two scoring two and three runs in the first two innings of the second game of the double header. Raton finally put two runs over the plate in the sixth inning to end the second game with the loss 7-2.

The boys game two also had its questionable calls as Dylan Quartieri slid into third just below the tag he was called out (see photo below) and the other call was a tag out at second but the Robertson second baseman dropped the ball as he went to throw it to first and the umpire called it safe. Objections by Robertson coaches and further conversation resulted in an overturned call leaving Raton with another out in the inning.
