Sloat-Prince Foundation Donation Means Over 500 Pounds of Trophy Trout Stocked in Lake Maloya

Thanks to a donation by the Sloat-Prince Foundation of Raton, more than 500 pounds of trophy trout were stocked Wednesday in Lake Maloya at Sugarite Canyon State Park.

“We do this to give people a chance to catch a quality trophy fish,” said park superintendent Robert McIvor after the stocking at the lake.

Shirley Prince donated $4,000 on behalf of the Sloat-Prince Foundation to the Friends of Sugarite to purchase the big fish. She was on site Wednesday and remembered how her parents loved to fish at the park.

The trophy trout were supplied by Crowthers’ Freshwater Trout in La Jara, CO.

Shirley Prince chats with a fish hatchery worker Wednesday.

Onlookers watch Wednesday as trophy trout plunge into Lake Maloya.
