In Loving Memory of Molly Martinez

Molly Martinez, our loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend died peacefully on April 27, 2021 surrounded by her family.   She was born on January 15, 1933 to Hilario Martinez and Della Gonzales.  She is preceded in death by her baby brother Alex, her beautiful daughter Brenda Martinez, her older sister Stella Lopez and her parents Hilario and Della.

Molly is survived by her loving husband Juan A. Martinez who is also known as Tony, her brother Hilario Jr., her son Richard Martinez, Daughter Pauline Martinez, and husband John Brandt and three amazing granddaughters, Selena, Carmen, and Daniela as well as numerous cousins.

Molly was raised in the Catholic Church and was taught that God was just as important as eating and sleeping.  Molly was a majordomo for St. Joseph’s parish and taught Catechism to the young children.  She graduated from Raton High School in 1952 and started working at Rubin’s Family Clothiers as a bookkeeper.   Christmas 1956 was the first time Molly travelled to Springer New Mexico with Tony to meet his family!  Tony’s family instantly welcomed Molly!  In 1957 Tony was discharged from the Navy and they were married on May 27, 1957 Tony’s birthday!

Molly raised her three children, Richard, Brenda, and Pauline.  Molly enjoyed many crafts.  She was the grand master of crochet and made many afghans over the years.  She embroidered beautifully and made quilts for her children.  She made Christmas ornaments out of sequins and styrofoam balls, Santa Claus out of Reader’s Digest books and stained-glass ornaments.  Molly enjoyed cooking beans, tostadas, enchiladas, and of course tamales.  Everyone helped make the tamales.

Molly also worked for the Raton Credit Bureau and for a local doctor’s office and later worked at the Raton Water Department.  Molly enjoyed computer games, print shop, and Word Perfect.  Additionally, she enjoyed long walks, bowling, and fishing — she caught a large fish and had it mounted!  Molly enjoyed all the small things in life such as her purple lilacs, hummingbirds, and black licorice candy.

Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be Tuesday, May 18 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s/St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Legion of Mary followed by the Holy Mass of our Lord on Tuesday, May 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s/St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Bill Woytavich as the Celebrant.  Rite of Committal and Internment will follow at Mt. I remember the time I took both of my parents on a vacation to the southwestern part of the United States. Starting in New Mexico we headed west to Arizona hitting casinos all along the way. Next came Nevada with an over night stay in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Casino. Later onto California where we stopped to see my dads brother. We drove all over the Los Angeles area then back north to Nevada for another night at Las Vegas. Then onto Utah for a very scenic tour. Next was Colorado for one more casino. Then back home.
This was only the beginning of several more trips later with my sister, Brenda. The trips continued with more trips along this route.
My mom Molly and dad, Tony had a awesome trip that will live forever in our memories.
My dad had asked me once. Rick, how in the world can you take us anywhere in this country and NOT get lost? Yet, when I ask you to take me to a friends house in Raton, you get LOST! 😳
I guess it paid off after driving semi trucks cross country for so long. I don’t need an atlas anymore to know my way! 😳😃👍 As far as Raton goes, I still get lost once in a while to this day. 😃
