We are here to play volleyball, a sentiment echoed by the six senior girls on the Raton High Volleyball team. After hopes were dashed in the fall of even getting to play, they are finally playing volleyball, albeit a strange and unusual time or year for New Mexico high school volleyball.
New Head Coach Vanessa Gonzales noted it’s been a tough year for the girls hoping to play in the fall but getting shut down and not knowing what was going to happen. The girls will be playing teams that they sometimes don’t play during a regular season and they are looking forward to it. They play Cimarron to start the home season, on March 10 a team they may play during the season but not a district opponent. Senior Seven Garcia noted it will be fun to share the match with other seniors they played against in middle school.
The girls are optimistic and ready to get the season underway and along with everything they’ve had to adapt to, they are adjusting to a new head coach as Vanessa Gonzales moves up from assistant, replacing long-time Lady Tiger coach Tina Beth Dorrance.
