In Loving Memory of Winifred Anna Barnes Modica

Winifred Anna Barnes Modica, passed away on March 2, 2021, at the tender age of 98.

She was born on a farm in Axtel, Kansas as the eldest girl in a family of six. She would begin her day in a one-room schoolhouse and finish the day by preparing the family dinner as her mother completed the chores. Despite few kitchen misadventures, her father would always say, “That’s the way I like it!”

In 1941 Winnie came West where her innate nature was nurtured and perfected as she graduated as a Registered Nurse from Seton School of Nursing in Colorado Springs. While continuing her studies in Trinidad, she met and married August J. Modica in October 1945. She spent most of her nursing career at Trinidad State Nursing Home where she retired in 1995.

Winnie was known for her generous and loving spirit. She nursed friends and family throughout her life. She was always the first one to be called in a time of need and, like one of her beautiful quilts, Winnie brought love and comfort to all.

Left to cherish her memory are children Sylvia Modica-Lucero(Ron Lucero), Joseph(Leslie) Modica, Anna Marie(Mark) Tobey, sisters Ruth Tanking, and Betty(Roger) Dannevick. Beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and co-workers.

Preceded in death by her husband August, parents, brothers, and sister, and numerous Modica family members.

Visitation will be Monday, March 8, 2021, from 3 pm-6 pm at the Comi Chapel

Due to Covid restrictions, the Modica family respectfully requests that you honor their privacy during this time.

The public is invited to gather at the Graveside Services with Rite of Committal on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at 2 pm at the Trinidad  Catholic Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Trinidad Inn, The Legacy, Drs. McFarland, and Borsa, Mt. Rose Hospice, and dear friend Peggy Hamlin.
