Raton Tigers Prepare for Season (St Mikes game cancelled)

The spring football season is quickly approaching. Spring Football? Thats right folks, because of Covid and the governor’s health orders high school football will happen this late winter early spring starting on March 6th here in Raton.

As Coach Tori Giacomo put it we are here to play football and have fun. With only one district opponent, St Mikes, this year it will be hard to call it much of a season, especially without the rivalry of Trinidad, West Las Vegas and Robertson. But it will go on with mostly Saturday afternoon games in the jungle but sadly with no fans in the stands.

The boys are simply happy to be playing. All four Seniors told KRTN that despite not playing the other rival teams they look forward to the game with St Mikes adding some rivalry to an otherwise ho hum season.

Of course KRTN will broadcast the games on 93.9 and the home games will be streamed live on the KRTN Facebook page. Per the governor’s health order each school will be allowed two broadcasters in the booth, one for play by play and one color commentator/statistician, one photographer and writer for the newspapers restricted from the end zone to the 10 yard-line.

Editorial Note: As I finished up the story we got the call that the game with St Mikes has been cancelled!
