DID YOU KNOW!!!!
January 13, 2021
Des Moines Families,
Happy New Year! We received written confirmation that we can resume in-person learning on Monday, January 18th. At this time, we will resume the Hybrid model on January 18th, similar to last fall. Pre-k – 12-grade students are welcome on campus. Pre-k, 3rd, and 5th grade will continue to have Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/ Thursday cohorts due to class size. A pilot program utilizing parent volunteers trained as substitutes to create an additional 5:1 ratio will enable kindergarten to be on campus four days a week. We have been and will continue to advocate that we need all students on campus daily. The support of families is greatly appreciated during this difficult time. We fully understand the additional challenges that this year has placed on families. Please let us know if we can help in any way.
Just as we did in the fall, we ask you to quarantine if you travel out of state except for medical care. We were fortunate to prevent any COVID spread in the fall and will continue our safe practices so we are able to have students and teachers on campus. DMMS continues to surveillance COVID test 10% of teachers and staff weekly. Additionally, vaccines should be available soon for staff who elect to participate.
As a reminder in virtual learning, students will need to have their device charged, and a quiet place to interact with their teacher and classmates. Studies have shown distractions such as cell phones inhibit working memory which reduces the brain’s ability to transfer information into long term memory. Therefore, students should not be using their cell phones during instructional time.
Students enrolled in ITV classes through Clovis Community College will resume on January 18th. We have ordered books and they should be in before Monday, January 18th. Mesa Lands courses will resume on January 20th.
We look forward to a great spring semester and are hopeful we will have a quick return to normal activities, which benefit our students in so many ways. As always we genuinely appreciate your support of Des Moines Schools.
Sincerely
Kodi Sumpter
