Raton Fire and Emergency Services along with Colfax County Rapid Response were dispatched to the Raton Landfill Wednesday afternoon, October 21, 2020 at about 2:45 p.m. for a fire in what is called the clean lumber scrap pile which is made up of construction lumber and tree limbs.

According to Fire Chief Anthony Burk the cause of the fire is a mechanical failure in the wood chipper that is used to chip up the wood for mulch. The chipper received extensive damage but isn’t a total loss.

Fire Fighters remained on the scene for several hours working the fire. Chief Burk noted they will cool the product and remove it and cool more product and remove it until the fire is completely extinguished.

It was a big fire that started in the clean lumber scrap pile at the Raton Landfill Wednesday afternoon.
