Collapsed Bridge on N.M. 456
CLAYTON – The New Mexico Department of Transportation District Four is currently in the process of obtaining emergency funds in order to remove the collapsed bridge on N.M. 456, milepost 42.3. The bridge, which crosses a dry Cimarron River, is an essential crossing for the traveling public which includes local ranchers, postal workers, school buses, and emergency responders. As the road is closed due to the bridge being destroyed, local traffic is having to detour approximately 80 miles, therefore a development plan for removing the destroyed structure and replacing with a department-owned temporary bridge structure is underway.
District Four Engineer, James Gallegos, has this as one of his highest priorities and commented that he foresees a resolution in the very near future. The safety of all New Mexico travelers is always the department’s highest priority.
The NMDOT apologizes for the inconvenience and recommends drivers plan accordingly for a delayed commute on N.M. 456. The department appreciates your patience and understanding as The New Mexico Department of Transportation is committed to the safety of the traveling public. For updated information on this project please contact Travis Martinez, NMDOT District Four Public Information Officer at 505-617-5900.
