It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Savino Chavez Jr. on Thursday August 5, 2020 at his home in Springer, NM. He was born to Savino Chavez Sr. and Maria M. Chavez of Ocate, NM.
Savino was predeceased by his parents Savino Chavez Sr. and Maria M. Chavez, his sister Mary Chavez of Socorro, NM, Ida Armijo of Pueblo, CO, and Fred Chavez of Miami, NM.
He is survived by his wife Dora Chavez of Springer, NM, his sister Dora Lucero of Socorro, NM, his sister Annie Garcia of Pueblo, CO, his son Richard Chavez Sr. of Springer, NM, his daughter Pearl Gurule and her husband Ronald Gurule of Springer, NM, his grandson Richard Chavez Jr. and his wife Leticia Chavez of Centennial, CO, his grandson Ronald Gurule Jr. of Springer, NM, his granddaughter Kirsten Gurule of Springer, NM and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Ocate, NM, and moved to Springer where he met his wife Dora Chavez. They remained happily married in Springer, NM for over 57 years until his death.
Savino was a loving man who always put family first. In the 8th grade Savino left school to help support his family sawmill. At age 18, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served during the Korean conflict. During his time in the United States military, Savino completed his secondary education and obtained his general education development (GED) certificate. After serving in the United States military, Savino spent over 30 years working at the New Mexico Department of Transportation in the highway department. During this time Savino also owned and operated Chavez Tree Trimming and Wood Sales.
Savino was well known in his community. He enjoyed spending his time telling stories and jokes over a cup of coffee with his family and friends.
Recitation of The Most Holy Rosary will be held on August 11, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Springer, N.M. recited by Deacon Olona, followed by the Solemn Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Trieu as the Celebrant. Interment will follow at the Springer Cemetery.
Per State and Local COVID-19 guidelines and requirements, social distancing and the use of face masks are required inside the Church as well as at the Cemetery. At this time, services are limited to family due to occupancy restrictions.
