Richard Lee Marquez age 74 of Raton, NM passed away on June 24, 2020, at the family home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on December 20, 1945, in Raton, NM the son of Doris Marquez. On September 7, 1968, Richard married his life-long soul mate Irene Casias and they were happily married for 51 years.
Richard is preceded in death by his mother Doris Marquez, Brother Anthony Marquez, Uncle Roger Marquez, Cousin Danny Prado, and Niece June Marquez. He is survived by his loving wife Irene Marquez of the family home, daughter Donna, and companion Randy of Pueblo, Co, Son Richard Joseph (RJ), and wife Bobbie Jean of Raton, Grandson(Son) Thomas Lee and wife Brook of Raton. Granddaughters, Madelaine of Albuquerque, Margarita, Illah, and Akilina of Raton, Great Grandson Damien of Albuquerque, Granddaughter Theresa of Albuquerque. Brothers Leonard Marquez of Winslow, AZ, Frankie Marquez of Cortez, Co, Sisters Dolores Madrid of Albuquerque, and Barbara Whitten of Raton. Brother-in-law Fermin Casias and wife Joann of Raton. Special Uncle Ernie Marquez and wife Dodi of California, special aunt Delfina Saldivar of Post, Texas, special niece and nephew Anita and Soloman Marquez of Raton, New Mexico. A special thank you to Lorraine Garcia for providing loving care for Irene and helping her through all the times she needed her the most. He was also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends.
On August 1, 1963, Richard enlisted in the New Mexico Army National Guard and was stationed in Fort Bliss Texas as a Rifle Marksman, he rose to the position of a Sergeant which his family is still proud of to this day. Upon his return to Raton, he came back home to his high school sweetheart, the lady who has always held his heart and the two married in 1968. Richard and Irene made their home in Raton and in 1969 they had their first child Donna and 13 years later their second child Richard Joseph (RJ) was born in 1983.
Richard worked for Fry’s Furniture, Erie Scientific, and lastly Morgan Building and Spas until his illness kept him from working any longer. He was a hard worker and a man of very few words, a quiet man but a very kind and caring soul. He loved his Washington Redskins football team, Lakers basketball team, and Dodgers baseball team but nothing compared to his chocolate cake, ok maybe his grandbabies did because to Richard his grandbabies were just as sweet to him as any chocolate cake could ever be. Richard will be greatly missed by all those that knew and loved him.
Recitation of The Most Holy Rosary will be on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s/St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raton, NM, recited by the Legion of Mary, followed by The Solemn Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. with Father Rob Yaksich as the Celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow at Fairmont Cemetery.
