Velma went to be with Our Lord on June 13, 2020, at the age of 98. She was the third of six children born to Antonia and Anton Cunja on August 11, 1921, in Yankee, New Mexico two months after the family arrived from Slovenia.
She grew up in Sugarite, New Mexico, and graduated from Raton High School. In Raton, she worked as a waitress at the El Portal and Yuca Hotels.
In 1959 Velma married Aldo Piacentini at St. Patrick’s Church in Raton, New Mexico. They made their home in Starkville, Colorado. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Trinidad and a supporter of many charities.
Throughout her life, she blessed many with her generosity and kindness. Although she had no children, she played a remarkably influential role in the lives of all her nieces and nephews. She was grateful for many wonderful friends and a loving family.
Preceding her in death was her husband Aldo Piacentini, parents Antonia and Anton Cunja, brother Mario Cunja, and sisters Marcella Perkovich, Mary King, and Elizabeth Ferraro.
She is survived by her sister Emma Carnevale of Trinidad and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
With respect to everyone’s health in this COVID environment, there will be a private family viewing and graveside service.
A special thank you to the following for the assistance they provided during her last years: EMT Responders, Trinidad Fire Department, Mt. Rose Health Center, Brother Harry, Teresa Doyle, Doctor Valerie Borsa, Mt. San Rafael Hospital, Trinidad Inn Nursing Home, and pallbearers.
Arrangements made under the direction of the Comi Funeral Home.
