The Lady Blue of Roy/Mosquero hosted the District 5A championship game Friday night February 28, 2020 in what turned out to be a great championship game with several lead changes and a wild game.
The Lady Blue began the game slow seemingly unable to find the basket as the Lady Rams took the early lead outscoring the Blue by 12-9. It would have been a 12-6 score had Riley Clavel not hit a 3-pointer from just inside the half court line to tighten the score up. The second quarter however was a turnaround the Lady Blue outscored Cimarron leaving it a tie game at halftime.
Second half action is where the Lady Blue took control and shut the Lady Rams down allowing on six points in the third quarter. But wait its a championship game and the Lady Rams are not to be denied as they head into the fourth quarter down by 10. Here is where the free throws could have made a big difference as the Lady Rams closed on the Lady Blue to within five. Four of the Lady Rams went to the free throw line and went three of seven at the line, a margin that could have been the difference in the final score. For the Lady Blue Riley Clavel was the only player to go to the free throw line in the second half where she went five of seven at the line, showing once again how important free throw shots are to a close game.
Another factor in this game for both teams were the fouls with Maya Salas (3rd qtr), Kiana Sandoval and high point Zoe Salazar fouling out of the game for Cimarron. Tanna Crisp and Sydney Turner (3rd qtr) both went to the bench early.
