The 84th Annual TSJC Invitational Tournament is in the record books with a barn burner of a boy’s championship game Saturday night December 7, 2019. the Raton Tiger boys took the championship trophy for the first time ever with a 49-43 win over the Kim/Branson Mustangs at Scott Gym on the TSJC Campus in Trinidad.
The game see-sawed back and forth in a game that never saw more than a seven point lead by either team with the score remaining four points or closer for most of the game.
In the girls championship game the Trinidad Lady Miners toppled the La Junta Lady Tigers in a 49-33 win. The game was closer in the first half but Trinidad found the rhythm and took a commanding lead in the second half for the trophy win.
While the Raton Lady Tigers struggled in the tourney they were awarded the Sportsmanship award Saturday night at the awards ceremony following the boy’s championship game. Raton Boys came out of the tourney with not only the first place trophy, but it was noted that it was their first in the history of the tournament. Raton head coach Jose Archuleta received the Coach Rich Arguello Award and Ben Kamp and Matthew Quartieri were chosen for the boys All Tournament Team. The cheer competition was reinstituted for this year’s tournament and the Raton Cheer squad brought home another 1st place trophy for their efforts at the tourney.
