Jesse Yeargain, age 80, died Sunday, October 20, 2019 at his home in Des Moines, New Mexico.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Des Moines Church of Christ in Des Moines, New Mexico. Burial will follow in the Des Moines Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton, New Mexico.

Jesse Yeargain was born on December 11, 1938 in Cardwell, Missouri to Hershel Yeargain and Della (McFarland) Yeargain. He was raised in Cardwell and graduated from high school in 1956. Jesse joined the US Air Force and went to Likeland Air Force Base for training and then was stationed at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico. It was while he was in Roswell that he met and married Helen (Argenbright) Yeargain on April 30, 1961. Jesse was shipped to Morocco Africa for about a year and when he returned to Roswell he joined the Roswell Police Department. In 1965 Jesse joined the US Army and spent a year in Vietnam. He returned to the Roswell Police Department and served for a few years and then joined the New Mexico State Police in 1972. They spent 10 months in Tucumcari and then moved to Des Moines where they put down their roots. Jesse retired from the New Mexico State Police on June 30, 1990 but later returned to working both at Records Ace Hardware in Raton and at the Sierra Grande Restaurant. He later returned to law enforcement when he successfully ran for Union County Sheriff and served two terms as Sheriff. He then served as Mayor of Des Moines before retiring again. Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters; Patsy Hufford and Bernice Looney both of Paragould, Arkansas and Pauline Martin of Memphis, Tennessee and 1 brother; Azro “Ed” Yeargain of Paragould, Arkansas.

SURVIVORS:

WIFE: Helen Yeargain of Des Moines, New Mexico.

1 DAUGHTER: Theresa Valdez of Raton, New Mexico.

1 GRANDDAUGHTER: Ashlee Martinez and her husband Sean of Clayton, New Mexico.

2 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Lakin Martinez and Laci Martinez both of Clayton, New Mexico.

1 SISTER: Vanetta Bishop of Paragould, Arkansas.

And numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

MEMORIALS: In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Jesse’s memory to the Des Moines Ambulance Service, Grenville Ambulance Service or the Folsom Ambulance Service.
