Raton Fire and Emergency Services responded to a grass fire on the west side of Highway 64 across from Raton Crews Field Airport and south of the NRA Whittington Center Thursday morning October 17, at about 11:15 a.m.
Upon arrival RFES asked for additional assistance for water tenders and grass units with units from Maxwell, Philmont, Cimarron and Colfax County District 8 helping out. According to Raton Fire Chief Chris Espinoza light winds helped to hold the fire to only eight acres. The tall grass in the area produced lots of smoke that could be seen from Raton and the surrounding area.
As of 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon fire fighters had the fire out and were mopping up hot spots. The cause of the fire is unknown.
