Josephine L. Duran was born in Miami, NM on February 19, 1942, the youngest of seven children born to Victor and Eliza Archuleta. Her friends and family referred to her as “Josie” or “Pina”, a nickname from childhood. She was a devoted wife to her husband of 50 years, Johnny Duran, and attentive to her son, Sam. Josie has one granddaughter, Maygann Duran. She is survived by a sister Emily DeHerrera and brother, Joe Archuleta, a large family of brothers and sister in laws, nephews, nieces and friends. She loved her community and fought bravely after surgeries and illnesses to return to her home in Springer, NM. She passed away peacefully at home in Albuquerque with her son and Melissa Duran at her side.
Josie was primarily a homemaker. She lived her whole life in Springer and the surrounding area. She loved trees and talked often of her youth in Colmor, NM. She fondly reminisced about the days gone by when there were frequent dances in the area. Folks socialized, visited and enjoyed each other’s company. She was devoted to this community and it was the only place she genuinely felt safe. She loved to go to the post office, do errands in town to see people she knew and loved. She liked familiarity and the warmth that a small community provides. She looked forward to Tony bringing her meals from the Senior Center, visits from her neighbor, Helen, and the support, calls and visits by her family.
Josie will be missed by her many family members. She was grateful for her family that for so many years embraced her. Please join us in saying goodbye to Josie.
