This fishing report, provided by Dustin Berg and Go Unlimited (supporting disabled anglers) and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
Bluewater Lake: Chandler Begay of Prewitt caught a 26-inch tiger muskie using a jerkbait on July 6. Nico Fulgenzi of Las Vegas, NM caught a 32-inch tiger muskie using a swim bait on July 5.
Caballo Lake: Jesse Lyons, age 14, of Las Cruces caught a 10-pound drum fish using shad as bait on July 7. Jesse’s grandpa also caught a huge carp using shad that same day.
Chama River below El Vado: Frank Garcia of Albuquerque caught a 22-inch, 3-pound brown trout using nightcrawlers as bait on July 8.
Chama River: Nevaeh Culin, age 9, of Tierra Amarilla caught a 22-inch rainbow trout using nymph scented purple PowerBait on July 6. She was fishing near the town of Chama.
Conchas Lake: Brody Garcia, age 5, of Albuquerque caught an 18-inch carp using a worm on the 4th of July.
Dennis Chavez Park Pond: Sara Snipes, age 9, of Savannah, Ga. caught a 14-inch catfish. She was using a black fly tagged with a piece of red worm fishing for bluegill when caught her 4th of July surprise.
Elephant Butte Lake: Clay Lewis, age 14, of Silver City caught a 28-inch walleye at daybreak on the 4th of July. He was using a green bomber cast towards a gravel bank from a boat.
Hopewell Lake: Leroy Chacon of Espanola caught an 18-inch rainbow trout using a fly on July 8.
Lake Van: Seth Hollingsworth, age 11, of Lubbock caught a 23-inch, 5-pound catfish using worms on July 6.
Rio Grande River: Luke Grossetete of Albuquerque caught a 40-inch 33-pound flathead catfish in the Rio Grande River in southern New Mexico on the 4th of July. He was using cut carp for bait.
Roswell Kids Pond: Avery Knight, age 8, of Roswell caught a 7-pound catfish using liver for bait on July 6.
San Gregorio Lake: Lilly Steen, age 3, of Tijeras caught her first fish, a rainbow trout, using peach PowerBait on July 8. She and her family caught and released a total of 15 fish that day.
Ute Lake: Robert Flores of Roswell caught an approximate 3-pound largemouth bass using a plastic crawdad rig on the 4th of July. He was fishing from his kayak.
The following reports came in late, but are definitely worth mentioning:
Elephant Butte Lake: Fredrick Kloeppel, age 6, and Kaylee Kloeppel, age 3, of Belen caught 5 big blue catfish in the Rio Grande north of Elephant Butte using bluegill on June 29. Kaylee caught the biggest fish, a personal best that weighed 5.28 pounds.
Escondita Lake: Maverick Alan Vallejos, age 3, caught a 17-inch catfish using a worm under a bobber during Free Fishing Day, June 1.
Hopewell Lake: Ethan Mendez, age 7, of Nambe caught a 17-inch rainbow trout
Hopewell Lake: John Gonzales of Taos caught a 17-inch rainbow trout using worms on July 2. green label salmon eggs on June 23. Bernardo Martinez of Albuquerque caught a 20-inch rainbow trout using salmon eggs on June 30.
Lake Maloya: Joey and Justin Scott of Cheyenne, Okla. and Guymon, Okla. respectively caught rainbow trout measuring 22 inches 4 pounds and 22 inches 4.5 pounds. They caught them June 30 using PowerBait.
Pecos River: Kai Bruns and brother Shea of Santa Fe caught limits of trout on July 2. They were using environmentally friendly rigs with multi-colored PowerBaits and corn flavored salmon eggs. Shea caught the biggest at 15-inches.
Santa Rosa Lake: Zac Sletten of Albuquerque caught a 5-pound 2-ounce largemouth bass using a Lunker Hunt prop turtle on July 1.
Seven Springs Hatchery: Diego Valdez, age 10, of Albuquerque caught an 18-inch brown trout on June 30. He was using a meal worm for bait. Skylee Cordova, age 7, of Los Lunas caught a 20-inch rainbow trout on June 30 using a PowerBait mixture.

Northeast Fishing Report
Cabresto Lake: We had one angler report that they saw multiple fish jumping but were unable to coax them into biting.
Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday morning was 27.9 cfs. Fishing was good using woolly buggers, beetle and ant patter flies.
Clayton Lake: As the weather gets warmer the fishing for walleye and trout is starting to slow down. Primarily when the weather is cooler mornings, evenings and cloudy fishing is still reported as fair using nightcrawlers, pick spinners and PowerBait for trout. In the evenings a few walleye have been caught fishing deep rocky structure using chartreuse curly tail grubs. Catfishing was fair using chicken liver. The boat ramp is closed due to low water levels.
Conchas Lake: Fishing was very good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was good using senkos, jigs, tubes and creature baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair to good using bottom bouncer spinner/worm rigs and minnow rigs for walleye. Jig heads with curly tail grub and minnow/worm combinations are also working well for walleye. Fishing was fair using cut bait, worms and liver for catfish.
Costilla Creek: Stream flow near Costilla on Monday was 108 cfs. Fishing is good with stimulator dry flies, beetle and ant patterns.
Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Coyote Creek: Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and worms for trout. A few trout were also caught by anglers using elk hair caddis flies.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good for trout and perch in the mornings and evenings using strike indicator with San Juan worm or black/tan wooly buggers below the water surface. Fishing was good using worms for perch. We had no reports on other species.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, spinners, worms, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Fawn Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Hopewell Lake: Fishing was good for trout. Large trout are reportedly being caught by anglers using salmon peach PowerBait as well as larger fly patterns such as wooly buggers and Pistol Petes.
Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Maloya: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, spoons, spinners and PowerBait for trout.
Los Pinos River: Fishing was good for anglers using woolly buggers and parachute adams flies.
Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing fair for trout using worms.
Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using yellow PowerBait, dry flies and grasshoppers for trout.
Morphy Lake: Closed for a renovation project on the dam and no firm opening date has been set.
Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos on Monday morning was 123cfs. Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, wooly buggers, leach pattern flies and Panther Martin spinners for a mixed bag of brown and rainbow trout.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 130 cfs. Fishing was good using Panther Martin holographic trout patterns for rainbow trout. Brown trout fishing was good using pointer minnow/Rapala type lures
Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge was 3,150 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow on Monday morning near Valdez was 74.8 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes.
Rio Mora: Stream flow on Monday morning was 27.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow on Monday morning near Penasco was 39.8 cfs. Fishing is fair to good using Panther Martin spinners and dry dropper fly combos using stimulator flies with woolly buggers/San Juan worms/pheasant tail size 14 and 16 flies below the water surface.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was fair to good using Super Dupers, spinners, spoons, Pistol Petes under a bubble, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Shuree Ponds: We hand no reports from anglers this week.
Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Storrie Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: Fishing was very good using nightcrawlers for big bluegill. Fishing was good using plastic crawdads, tubes, senkos (rigged wacky) and grubs in 5 to 10 feet of water for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Good plastic bass bait colors have been natural, green, pumpkin and watermelon. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits that dive 10 to 12 feet for white bass that are beginning to school up. Fishing was slow fair using jigs, gulp minnows and live minnows for walleye. Fishing for catfish was good using liver and stink bait. The surface water temp was in the upper 70s.
Northwest Fishing Report
Abiquiu Lake: Fishing has been inconsistent probably due to the fluctuating lake water level. This past week anglers reported good fishing using nightcrawlers for walleye and catfish. Anglers are advised to use four-wheel drive vehicles to launch boats and watch for obstructions on the water.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 4,640 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing for carp was good using nightcrawlers.
Bluewater Lake: Fishing was very good for tiger muskie this past weekend. Anglers reported catching them on jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and few were caught on top water lures. Fishing for catfish was fair with a few caught on chicken liver. Trout fishing was very slow, no one reported catching any trout this weekend.
Brazos River: Fishing was good using small bead head nymphs and worms for trout.
Canjilon Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using spinners, Pistol Petes and PowerBait for trout.
Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 499 cfs and 899 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using night crawlers, streamers, wooly buggers, flies, Panther Martins and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. Some large brown trout up to 22-inches were caught by anglers last week. Fishing was good for brown trout below Abiquiu Dam using flies with the color yellow in them.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing has been slow and the water is murky. Fishing was slow to fair fishing for catfish using beef liver, homemade dough baits, worms, cut bait and stink bait. We had no reports on other species.
El Vado Lake: Fishing was very good for bass near the dam. Some trout were caught on the north end of the lake with one of the trout caught being reported at 20 plus inches.
Fenton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using spoons, Pistol Petes, nightcrawlers, PowerBait and a variety of flies for trout.
Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species with just a few trout and kokanee salmon caught by anglers. The best bank fishing was reported to be on the lake’s western edge using worms and PowerBait for trout.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez near the town of Jemez on Monday morning was 16.7 cfs. Fishing on the upper Jemez and San Antonio was good using dry flies and hoppers for rainbow and brown trout. A dropper fly, nymph or leech, attached to a hopper fly is a combination that is working well. Mosquitos are abundant and anglers should bring bug spray.
Laguna del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
McGaffey Lake: Fishing for trout was slow.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was slow for crappie. Fishing was fair to good using 3 to 4 inch natural red and orange plastic crawdad lures on jig heads. A few rainbow and brown trout were caught by anglers trolling crank baits. Pike fishing was fair using white/yellow crankbaits and swim baits in 10 to 30 feet of water. We had no reports on other species.
San Gregorio Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes.
San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 835 cfs. There recently was an ant hatch and the bite for such flies should continue for a few days. Trout fishing in shallower runs from Texas hole up stream towards the damn is fishing good with size 22-26 midges, anilids, crystal flash and crème larvae. Fishing below Texas hole in the deeper runs, fishing is fair using San Juan worms, leach patterns and egg patterns. Fishing the bait waters was fair to good using night crawlers, spinners and Gulp eggs.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, a wide assortment of small flies, leach patterns, woolly buggers and Pistol Petes for trout.
Tingley Beach: Fishing at all ponds was fair using worms and flies for bluegill. Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Southwest Fishing Report
Alumni Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing for catfish has been fair to good using worms and chicken liver.
Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using minnows for crappie. Fishing was good using crank baits that dive 8 to 12 feet, curly tail grubs, spoons and sassy shad for white bass. Walleye was also fair to good using crankbaits and curly tail grubs. There were no reports on other species.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was slow to fair probably due to heavy boat traffic over the holiday weekend. White bass fishing is starting to pick up. Fishing was slow to fair using chatter baits, crank baits, creature baits, jigs, top water lures, senkos and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye and crappie was slow to fair using crank baits that dive 12 to 14 feet deep, sassy shad and curly tail grubs. Fishing was good using cut bait, worms and chicken liver for catfish primarily on the north end of the lake.
Escondida Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 26.6 cfs. Fishing for trout is fair near the catwalk.
Glenwood Pond: Fishing for trout is good using PowerBait.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was slow for all species.
Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Quemado Lake: Fishing was good for trout ranging from 10 to 20 inches using spinners, spoons, and pink/purple/lime green PowerBait.
Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 2,570 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte was fair to good using curly tail grubs, sassy shad and minnows for walleye.
Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Young Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Southeast Fishing Report
Alto Lake: Fishing was fair to good for catfish using worms.
Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday morning was 28.6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Blue Hole Park Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage. It appears now that the lake will be out of commission until the spring of 2020.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday morning was 1,380 cfs. Fishing for catfish was good using chicken liver.
Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ruidoso River: Stream flow on Monday morning at Hollywood was 5.28 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair to good for anglers using salmon eggs and Panther Martin spinners.
Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits and curly tail grubs for bass, walleye and crappie. Anglers fishing in the evening reported catching limits of walleye. Water release began July 7 and the lake level is expected to drop 8.5 feet over the next 10 days. After the release is complete, catfishing in the river below the dam is expected to be good.
Sumner Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, senkos and crawdads for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using liver and nightcrawlers for catfish. Fishing was fair using crank baits and minnows for white bass and walleye.
