Francis Dwaine Stewart was born on July 6, 1941 at his home in Texline, Texas to Byron and Daisy Rea Stewart. He attended Clayton High School until his Sophomore year and graduated from Texline High School in 1961. He dropped out of school his junior year to go “active” with the National Guard. When he returned to school he had enough credits to skip his junior year and successfully complete his senior year studies. After he graduated he attended business college and became a question of finances. Having joined the National Guard in 1959, Dwaine decided to join the Army in 1966 during basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas. Dwaine was assigned to a Hawk Missile Unit as a mechanic and later as a welder. He was subsequently named to Repair Parts and PPL (Prescribed Load List). Ordered to Vietnam, Dwaine was stationed with a “light equipment” unit of support combat engineer battalion in the north part of southern republic. Combat engineers build roads and the Army’s light equipment includes such things as bulldozers and earthmovers. Promoted to the position of Company Expediter (also known as company scrounge) it was Dwaine’s duty to acquire the necessary supplies, parts and pieces to keep the machinery moving. He returned to Texline following his Army discharge. He then went active duty with the National Guard for a second hitch. Then on one jaunt back home to Clayton he met a former CHS schoolmate, that was in March of 1974 and on October 26 of that year he married Rebecca Marquez. On May 27, Dwaine became the full time active duty recruiter for the National Guard as a section Sargent. While in Vietnam, SSG Stewart, although regular Army, was assigned in support of a Battalion of the Idaho National Guard, the 116th Engineer Battalion Combat. He served 30 years combined between the National Guard and Army and retired as a Master Sargent. After he retired he was called back for Desert Storm. He tried his hand as such as millwright, ironworker, truck driver, welder, heavy equipment operator, salesman, chimney sweep, mail route contractor and servicing sprinklers with Stewart Enterprises as an entrepreneur until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents by a son; Paul Christopher Marquez on December 2, 2013 and by three brothers; J L Stewart of Amarillo, Texas, Donnie Stewart and his wife Gayle of Sudan, Texas and Garland Stewart of Hobbs, New Mexico and a granddaughter; Harley Burnett.
