Local Student, Donavin Mendez, Named Semifinalist in US Presidential Scholars Program

Donavin Myles Mendez, a graduating senior at Raton High School, has been named one of the 621 semifinalists in the 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 5,300 candidates expected to graduate from US high schools in the year 2019. There were 3.2 million initial applications and those have been carefully reviewed to 16,000 candidates and reviewed again to 5,300 candidates and now down to 621 semi-finalist candidates.

Inclusion in the US Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 55th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in community and school activities.

A distinguished panel of educators have reviewed these submissions and selected 621 semifinalists. The Commission on Presidential Scholar, a group of 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the finalists, and the US Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May.

Scholars will be invited to Washington DC, for several days in June to receive the Presidential Scholar Medallion at a recognition ceremony and to participate in events and activities.

Donavin is the son of George and Samantha Mendez.

Thank you for helping us celebrate this young man.
