Both Raton spring ball teams hosted Robertson Tuesday afternoon for a single district game and for softball it was an interesting trip up from Vegas for former assistant coach Robby Armijo who now heads the softball program at Robertson.

Armijo who coached at Raton under head coach Tina Dorrance noted it was a bit weird coming into town on the Lady Cardinal bus and coming to Jim Wade Field. Armijo helped coach many of the girls his team now plays against. While it was all hugs to see Armijo when it came down to the game his Lady Cardinals took charge holding Raton to only seven at bats and scoreless in the first two innings. Robertson put the first run on the board in the third. Lady Cardinal pitcher Kylee Moberg threw nine strikeouts and helped hold Raton scoreless until the sixth inning when Jadyn Walton finally made it around the bases for a score.

While Raton struggled at the plate, the Lady Cardinals faired a bit better especially later in the game when Robertson rounded the bases and took the final score to 7-1.

Over at Gabrielle Field the boys were holding their own till Robertson rallied with a 10-run fourth inning which started off with a grand slam homer by Derrick Montano. Again Raton struggled at the plate with several popup fly balls that fell for outs and three strikeouts. Raton sent three pitchers to the plate while Robertson’s Jason Gold went the distance pitching to only 16 batters with three strikeouts and one walk.

Raton’s Matthew Quartieri started the game going 3.3 innings and met 21 batters with one strikeout and three walks. Chance Middlebrook went .67 innings met 12 batters with no strikeouts and one walk. Jesse Kelly finished the game going up against six batters with no strikeouts and no walks.
