District 5A Basketball crowned the district champs this weekend as Cimarron and Maxwell hosted the championship games.
On Friday evening, March 1, Cimarron hosted the Roy/Mosquereo Lady Blue who managed to squeak by the Lady Demons 49-48 to move on to the championship game in Cimarron. The Lady Rams however weren’t going to let the Lady Blue take another one as they held the Lady Blue to only four points in the first quarter. Riley Clavel the Lady Blue hot hand only managed to find the basket once for two. Baylee Horn was the only other one to score in the first while Cimarron spread out the scoring among the starting five.
As the second quarter began the Lady Blue finally began to find the groove but it was going to be too little too late as the Lady Rams pressed and created a few turnovers that they were able to take advantage of and put up the scores.
The second half of the game the Lady Rams continue to outscore Roy/Mosquero 23-12 in the third quarter but it was Riley Clavel who in the fourth made up points at the free throw line going 9-11 attempts. When the final buzzer sounded the Lady Rams pulled out a 21 point win for the championship trophy.

On Saturday evening, March 2, the Maxwell Bears hosted the Des Moines Demons for the boys championship game where Maxwell once again marked the win column and the took the district title as they have down in the past couple of years.
As the game got under way it was the Riggs boys who dominated the boards and continued to do so through out the game for Maxwell. The Bears held the Demons to only five points in the first quarter with Hayden Briesh popping a 3-pointer and Aron Sakelaris with two. The second quarter saw Des Moines go point for point with Maxwell in tough physical play.
The second half of play continued to be physical but Maxwell managed to spread the points and outscore Des Moines by 10. Neither team spent much time working the ball as several trips up and down the court were run and gun play. Both teams would come down the court and get a player open for the shot.
The fourth quarter also saw Maxwell outscore Des Moines by 10 in a fast paced quarter. The final buzzer sounded ending the game that lasted only about an hour. Surprisingly the first quarter only took 11 minutes to complete.
