The St Mikes Lady Horsemen travelled up I-25 Friday to take on Raton for the first district home game of season in Tiger Gym on Friday night, January 25th.

The Lady Tigers had struggled this season and felt the loss of Andie Ortega, a primary ball handler, and now Abby Phillips who filled in as needed under the basket. Unfortunately the injuries both girls suffered will likely cause them to miss their springs sports as well, which will impact the softball season.  Raton’s Isabella Robertson, who plays both JV and varsity, sat the bench with ice on her ankle after a fall in the JV game.

The Raton varsity girls got off to a very slow start in the game but battled back to keep the scoring fairly even through the middle of the game. Had it not been for the 18-2 first quarter deficit,  the Lady Tigers would have kept this game much closer.

The Lady Horsemen put the pressure on the Lady Tigers but with team work they broke the press several times however were unable to make it pay with balls through the basket. As the end of the game neared the Lady Tigers never gave up but were unable to overcome that first quarter slump and lost 66 – 38.

During the C-Team game Raton struggled to get the ball past half court as the Lady Horsemen put the pressure on the girls and forced the turnovers, taking advantage and scoring points to rapidly extend their lead. With the exception of the fourth quarter where neither team scored more than one bucket, St. Mikes was in double figures with 21 in the first and 22 in the third. When the buzzer sounded ending the game it was a 56-12 win for the Lady Horsemen.

The JV game didn’t fair much better for the Lady Tigers getting off to a slow start and struggling to get the ball in the basket. Raton could only muster single digit scoring throughout the game while St Mikes did double digits with the exception of the fourth quarter. The score at the end of the game looked very much like the previous game with a 54-18 win for St Mikes.
