On September 13, 2018, with his mother and sister at his side, 34-year-old Atilano (Indio) Diaz, Jr. of Trinidad, CO left this earth to walk through the gates of Heaven. Atilano was born on July 23, 1984 to his parents, Linda Santistevan and Atilano Diaz. He is survived by two sons, Atilano and Acelino Diaz, in addition to his parents and three sisters, Cynthia, Evarista, and Maria Diaz.
Known for his hard work, Indio mainly dedicated his time to the field of construction. He enjoyed this craft, which allowed him to use his hands to build homes around Trinidad and Denver. People around Trinidad may also recognize him as one of the best red chili tamale makers in town. While many customers enjoyed his talent for cooking this traditional homemade delicacy, there were a few ladies who were quick to fix their hair and make-up before the tamale delivery just to smile back at Indio who always showed his gratitude for everyone’s business with a flash of his dimples as he smiled.
To friends and family Atilano was known as Indio. He was a kind and friendly person who easily befriended new people, but to his closest friends from childhood Tony (Bob), Robert (Bobo), and Jason (Tato), he was known for his loyalty. As Tony said when he stopped by the house to pay his respects, those deep bonds of friendship were built playing pogs in the playground at school.
Indio was loved and appreciated by his family. As a proud father of two boys, Indio was always ready to share his knowledge and help them become strong, independent individuals. Indio cared deeply for his three sisters. He was ready to defend them when necessary and loved them always. For his nieces and nephews, Tio Indio was quick to make them laugh.
The only son of Linda Santistevan, Indio was very close to his mother. If anything went wrong or right, he reached out to her for comfort, support, and wisdom. And with the unconditional love of a mother, she always reached back. It is with a broken heart that Indio’s mother gives her son to be at the side of the Lord before her, but she finds peace in knowing that Indio will be walking into His arms.
We invite you to join us in celebrating the life of Atilano Diaz Jr. at 1pm on Friday, September 28th, 2018 at Holy Trinity Church. Reception to follow that will be announced at services.
