Doyle Foreman passed away on August 17th, 2018, at the Beehive, an assisted living facility in Raton, NM, at 93 years of age. He was born in Amarillo, TX, on February 7, 1925, to Albert D. Foreman and Annie P. Smith (Foreman). He was the middle of three children. Growing up he always had a paper route and, at times, two routes.
Doyle was drafted into the Army in 1943, where he served as a ward boy for the military hospital in Ft. Sill, OK. He was sent to El Paso, TX for training as a pharmacist for the Army, and returned to Ft. Sill as a pharmacist’s assistant for the remaining time that he was enlisted.
Upon his release from the Army, Doyle went to Oklahoma A & M and achieved his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Zoology. Then he and his older brother Dale tried to make a living farming at Vigo Park, Texas. As he noted later, “We saw a lot of money go by, but very little of it stuck with us.” In 1956, Doyle started selling life insurance with Southwestern Life. It wasn’t for him, and in 1959, Doyle, his wife Virginia and two children, moved to the “Pink House”, near Farley, NM and took up ranching. Their third son, Don, was born a year later.
In 1967, Doyle and Virginia went to Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM and got their teaching certifications. They both then taught in the Springer School system until 1988 when they both retired. After losing his beloved Virginia in 2000, Doyle moved to Ute Park, NM where he resided until 2012 then moving back to Springer. He lived on his own until June of 2018, when his eyesight failed him to the point of making him move to the Beehive.
Doyle was an Eagle Scout, an avid bird watcher, and loved reading about history. He also took the “Sym Brown Scholarship Fund” from $38,000 to $204,000, (with the school’s permission) by investing, reinvesting, and donations. He will be missed and remembered by all who knew him.
Doyle is preceded in death by his wife Virginia in 2000.
Doyle is survived by his brother, Dale Foreman and wife Betty – Grand Junction, CO. His sister, Phyllis Sullivan – Wasilla, Alaska. His daughter, Marla Foreman – Boston, Massachusetts. His older son, Gordon Foreman and wife Susan, with two grandsons, Ben and Samuel with wife Monica and great -grandson Evan – Cuenca, Ecuador. Don Foreman and wife Regina – Springer, NM.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the “Sym Brown Scholarship Fund” at Springer High School.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 10 AM in the “Old Gym” on Garfield Street in Springer.
