In Loving Memory of Edward Lee Murphy

Edward Lee Murphy, AGE 98, DIED Sunday, June 24, 2018 in Billings, Montana.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at the Clayton Church of God in Clayton, New Mexico Burial will follow in the Texline Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton, New Mexico.

Edward Lee Murphy was born on January 4, 1920 in Kaufman County, Texas to Mastin L. and Carrie Matthew Murphy. He was the youngest member of a large family. He left home at an early age, traveling to New Mexico, where he held such jobs as delivery boy for Western Union, a taxi cab driver, farm and construction worker. He became a licensed minister for the Church of God in 1941. His first pastorate was in Sedan, a farming community in north east New Mexico. There he met a raven-haired beauty, Myrtle Callis, who became his wife on July 19, 1942. He pastored churches in 8 states and in Ontario, Canada. He was a guest speaker in numerous other states. He built churches in Olton, Texas; Bozeman and Great Falls, Montana, and in Clayton, New Mexico. He retired from active ministry at the age of 82, but continued teaching Sunday school for many years. Edward bought his first typewriter at age 70 and his first computer at age 75. He wrote numerous articles for the Church of God Sunday school literature and was contributing author for three books. After purchasing his computer, he wrote over 400 sermons. At age 93, he wrote and published a children’s book. At the time of his death, he was writing a Christian novel, and two other children’s books, which he instructed his daughters to complete. He enjoyed his last Father’s Day with his children, their spouses, a great-granddaughter, a great-great-granddaughter, and friends. On June 24, 2018 he was summonsed to appear in the court of heaven, where he was greeted with well-done, my good and faithful servant. He was preceded in death by his parents, and all his siblings, his wife, Myrtle Callis Murphy, and daughter Bertie Alene.

SURVIVORS:

CHILDREN: Carrie Merreline and her husband Jim Kerr, Boyd Murphy and his wife Joyce, Douglas Murphy and his wife Tom Lee, and Phyllis Murphy and her husband Paul Mazel.

4 GRANDCHILDREN: David Cain, Heather McCall and her husband Jonas, Cambi Mann and her husband Sean and Collin Murphy and his wife Jill.

eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
