In an emergency meeting Wednesday June 13, Colfax County Commissioners approved Resolution 2018-16, which bans the sale and use of certain fireworks in the unincorporated portions of Colfax County. The resolution also bans all fireworks within the wildlands of Colfax County.
According to the most recent National Integrated Drought Information System report, Colfax County is experiencing extreme or severe drought conditions which leads to extreme fire danger on range lands, brush, grass, forest and structures.
The ban includes the sale and use of missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick-type rockets and ground audible devices. The use of fireworks not listed is limited to areas that are paved or are free from vegetation and have a ready source of water to extinguish any fire that may start.
The county just like the city does not have the authority to totally ban fireworks but can control the sales of certain types of fireworks and the use of fireworks in the unincorporated areas.
The fine for the use of fireworks is $1000.00 and or one year in prison.
The resolution will be effective for 30 days from June 13, 2018. If extreme or severe drought conditions continue the ban will be extended.
